# Al Ain

> Al Ain is inland and dry, so the coastal haze that flattens every summer photograph in Dubai is simply absent — and the oasis gives shade at the hours the coast has none.

The city grew around springs at the foot of Jebel Hafeet, and its two subjects are the springs and the mountain. The oasis — part of the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage listing — is more than a thousand hectares of date palms watered by falaj channels, with shaded lanes open to walk at no charge. Under the canopy the light is dappled and soft at times of day that would be unusable on a beach, which makes it the one location in the country where a ten o’clock session in April is a reasonable idea.

Jebel Hafeet is the counterweight: a single limestone ridge rising over a thousand metres from the plain, with a road of sixty bends up to a car park near the summit. From the top the city spreads north, the dunes run away west, and the sunset goes down over open desert. Between them sit the mud-brick forts — Al Jahili, Qasr Al Muwaiji — which light beautifully in the afternoon and close at set hours. Al Ain is about ninety minutes from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so it is a full day trip or a night away.

## When to go

November to March on the mountain and in the forts; the oasis works into April and May thanks to its shade. Al Ain’s summer is the hottest in the country’s inhabited areas — dry, clear and above 45 °C by midday — so the summit at sunrise is the only summer session we offer. Winter evenings at the top of Jebel Hafeet are cold and windy, and the car park fills on weekends for sunset.

## Photo spots

### Jebel Hafeet summit

- Coordinates: 24.058, 55.7809
- Best time: Sunset in winter, sunrise in summer
- Access and permits: Free — public road and car park; the summit area is near military installations, so keep cameras pointed at the view

The UAE’s second-highest peak, a bare ridge with the road snaking up its flank. The best frames are from the switchbacks below the top, looking down at the road and the desert, not from the summit car park itself. It is a windy place — long dresses fly here without any help.

- **November–March**: Sunset over the western desert, clear to the horizon on most evenings; temperatures drop fast after dark.
- **May–September**: Sunrise only, and the summit is a few degrees cooler than the city. By eight it is too bright and too hot.

### Al Ain Oasis

- Coordinates: 24.2173, 55.7697
- Best time: Opening time to late morning
- Access and permits: Free entry, daytime hours. Commercial shoots need approval from the Department of Culture and Tourism

Shaded lanes between mud walls and date palms, with the falaj running alongside in a stone channel. A couple or a family walks into the frame and the canopy does the lighting. The palms are working farms behind the walls, so the paths are the location and the gardens are left alone.

- **March–May**: When the rest of the country has lost its daytime light, the canopy still gives soft, broken shade until about eleven.
- **November–February**: Low sun slants through the trunks in the first hour after opening — the most textured light of the year here.

### Al Jahili Fort

- Coordinates: 24.2162, 55.7521
- Best time: The last hour before closing
- Access and permits: Free entry; closed one day a week and on Friday mornings. Commercial shoots need approval

A late nineteenth-century fort with a round, four-tiered tower and crenellated walls, set in lawns with palms. The tower is the frame — it catches the afternoon sun on its west face. Opening hours end before sunset, so this is a late-afternoon stop on the way up the mountain rather than a golden-hour location.

### Qasr Al Muwaiji

- Coordinates: 24.2251, 55.7273
- Best time: Late afternoon
- Access and permits: Free entry, set hours; professional equipment by arrangement

A square mud-brick fort, restored with a modern glass pavilion inside its walls, and the birthplace of the UAE’s second president. The contrast of old wall and new glass makes a cleaner, more architectural frame than Al Jahili, and it is almost always quiet.

### Green Mubazzarah

- Coordinates: 24.1025, 55.7504
- Best time: Early morning, on a weekday
- Access and permits: Free — public park; the hot-spring pools are separate

Lawns and a lake at the foot of Jebel Hafeet, with the mountain wall rising behind. The point is the scale — green grass, a figure, and a kilometre of bare rock above. Families picnic here at weekends; on a weekday morning it is open ground.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we do Jebel Hafeet and the oasis in one session?

Yes, with the order reversed from what most people expect: the oasis in the morning or early afternoon for its shade, the mountain for sunset. They are about twenty-five minutes apart, and a forty-five-minute summit drive is part of the plan.

### How do we get to Al Ain?

By car — about ninety minutes from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Al Ain has its own airport but very few passenger flights; nearly everyone flies into Dubai or Abu Dhabi. For a sunset on the mountain, the drive back is after dark, which is why we recommend staying a night.

### Is Al Ain too hot in summer for a photoshoot?

For the mountain and the forts, yes, except at sunrise. The oasis is the exception: the shade under the palms is real, and a session that starts at opening and ends by half past ten is comfortable enough most of the year.
