# Dubai Desert (Dubai)

> The red dunes at Lahbab, the pale sand at Al Qudra and the protected reserve are three different deserts with three different sets of rules, and a summer session in any of them ends forty minutes after sunrise.

"The desert" in Dubai means three places. Lahbab, about 45 minutes out on the Hatta road, has the tall, red-orange dunes most people picture and is open land — but it is also where the dune-bashing convoys run, so the session is early, before they arrive, and on a ridge away from their tracks. Al Qudra, inside the Al Marmoom reserve to the south, is flatter and paler, with lakes and ghaf trees; it is reachable on tarmac, gentler for families and pregnant clients, and its open areas are where a drone is most realistic. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is the most pristine — oryx and gazelle, untouched sand — and can only be entered with one of its licensed operators; no private 4×4s and no drones.

The soft dunes need a 4×4 and a driver who knows them; ordinary cars stop at the tarmac. Golden hour is short this far south — roughly 30–40 minutes of warm, low light after sunrise and before sunset — and the dunes only show their shape when the sun is low enough to throw shadows across the ridges. The flying dress needs wind, but not too much: a light breeze is ideal, and in a winter shamal the sand blows into eyes and lenses. Bare feet are possible in winter mornings; in summer the sand is too hot to stand on by mid-morning.

## When to go

October to April is desert season, and November to February is the best of it — dry air, long shadows, sand you can kneel on. Sunrise sessions start about 30 minutes before the sun appears; sunset sessions finish in the dark, and the drive back is part of the plan. May to September is sunrise only, starting before 5:30 am and done by 7, with water in the car and no bare feet. Haze in summer turns the horizon white.

## Photo spots

### Lahbab red dunes

- Coordinates: 25.042, 55.592
- Best time: Sunrise, before the safari convoys
- Access and permits: Free — open desert; 4×4 access needed

The tallest and reddest sand within an hour of the city, with ridges high enough to put a person against nothing but sky. Afternoons belong to the dune-bashing tours and their tyre tracks, so sessions are mostly at sunrise, when the overnight wind has smoothed the slopes. This is where the flying dress and the desert portrait sessions go.

- **November–February**: Sunrise around 6:40–7:05; the sand stays cool enough for bare feet until about 9, and the long shadows give the dunes their shape for nearly an hour.
- **June–August**: Sunrise about 5:30 and already over 30 °C; shoes on, 45 minutes of shooting, and the sand is too hot to touch soon after.

### Al Qudra Lakes

- Coordinates: 24.835, 55.376
- Best time: Sunset
- Access and permits: Free — public part of the Al Marmoom reserve

Man-made lakes in the desert with birds, ghaf trees and low, pale dunes around them. Reachable by ordinary car, which makes it the gentle desert option for families, maternity sessions and anyone who does not want a 4×4 ride. Weekend evenings bring campers and barbecues; weekdays are quiet.

- **November–February**: Migrating birds on the water and still air at sunset give mirror reflections; weekend evenings are busy with campers.
- **May–September**: Sunrise only; the lakes shrink, the edges turn to mud and flies come with the heat.

### Al Marmoom open dunes

- Coordinates: 24.743, 55.405
- Best time: Golden hour, either end of the day
- Access and permits: Free access; drone flights only by a licensed operator with an approved permit

Rolling, cleaner sand south of Al Qudra, away from the tour routes. It is where aerial desert work is most often realistic: open sky, no towers, distance from DXB. Pale sand reflects light up into faces, so midday-adjacent frames are less harsh here than in red dunes, but heat still sets the limit.

### Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

- Coordinates: 24.862, 55.646
- Best time: Sunrise or the late-afternoon safari slot
- Access and permits: Entry only with a licensed reserve operator (tour fee charged separately); no drones

The protected core of Dubai’s inland desert, where Arabian oryx and gazelle graze and the sand has no tyre tracks. Access is through a handful of licensed operators and their vehicles, so a session here is joined to one of their departures. In return you get the cleanest dunes in the emirate and wildlife in the background.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do we need a 4×4?

For Lahbab and the higher dunes, yes — an ordinary car stops on the tarmac. The 4×4 desert transfer add-on is $90 and includes the driver. Al Qudra Lakes is reachable by any car.

### How does the flying dress work in the desert?

The dress comes with the photographer, in your size range, with someone to throw the train. You change in the car. It needs a light breeze — on a still morning the assistant creates the movement, in a strong shamal we postpone, because sand in the fabric and in the lens ruins both.

### Can you fly a drone in the desert?

In parts of it, yes: the desert is where drone work in Dubai is realistic. Flights are done by a licensed operator with a permit for that location and time. Never in the Conservation Reserve, and never by a visitor with their own drone.

### Is a summer desert shoot safe?

At sunrise, yes, kept short. We start before 5:30 am, finish by about 7, carry water and shade, and keep shoes on. Sunset in summer is not offered: the sand has absorbed the whole day’s heat by then.
