# Hatta

> Hatta is Dubai’s mountain town, ninety minutes inland, and the turquoise dam everyone has seen is only bright when the sun is high enough to reach the water.

The dam sits in a steep bowl of brown rock, and its colour depends on light falling into the bowl rather than across it. At sunrise the water is in shadow and reads dark green; the turquoise arrives about an hour later and holds through the morning. That is the opposite of what a coastal session teaches, and it is why a Hatta shoot starts later than people expect and is planned around the kayaks — they open at seven, and the photograph is two people in a yellow kayak on bright water with the cliffs behind.

The rest of Hatta is texture: the restored Hatta Heritage Village with its mud-brick houses and watchtowers, the mountain-bike trails around the Wadi Hub, and the bare ridges in every direction. It is an exclave of Dubai, so Dubai’s rules apply — recreational drone flying is suspended and aerial work goes through a licensed operator with approval, and close to the Omani border that approval is not a formality. On winter weekends the town is busy with Dubai residents; on a weekday morning the dam can be nearly empty.

## When to go

October to April. Winter mornings are cool enough for a jacket and the light stays clean until eleven. Weekends from December to February are crowded at the dam and the kayak queue grows by nine. Summer is as hot as the coast but drier; a session runs from seven to about half past eight and then stops. After heavy winter rain the wadis can flood — we reschedule rather than risk the road.

## Photo spots

### Hatta Dam

- Coordinates: 24.7842, 56.1123
- Best time: Eight to eleven in the morning
- Access and permits: Free to walk; kayaks and pedal boats are rented by the hour from about 7 am

A reservoir of startlingly blue-green water in a bowl of bare rock, with steps down from the dam wall to the kayak jetty. The frame from the water — a second kayak, a short lens, a dry bag — is the one people come for. From the dam wall above, the reservoir and the mountains fit together with the kayaks as small bright points.

- **November–February**: The sun clears the eastern rim around eight; until then the water is dark. Best colour from nine to eleven.
- **May–September**: The sun is higher and reaches the water by seven, but the rock radiates heat from mid-morning. Start at seven, finish by half past eight.

### Hatta Heritage Village

- Coordinates: 24.7959, 56.1192
- Best time: The last two hours of sun
- Access and permits: Free entry; opening hours apply. Commercial shoots need Dubai Culture’s approval

A restored mountain village of mud brick and palm-frond roofs, with two round watchtowers on the hill above. The towers catch the late sun, and the path up to them gives the village, the palms and the ridges in one frame. Modest dress, as in any heritage site.

### Hatta Wadi Hub and mountain-bike trails

- Coordinates: 24.814, 56.1599
- Best time: Sunrise to nine
- Access and permits: Trails free to ride; bike rental and activities at the hub are paid

More than fifty kilometres of graded trails over gravel ridges, starting from the Wadi Hub a few kilometres from town. For a holiday video or an active couple, this is the frame with motion in it — riders on a crest against an empty valley. The ridges face every direction, so a morning session can follow the light from one side of a hill to the other.

### Hatta Hill Park

- Coordinates: 24.8013, 56.1293
- Best time: Sunset
- Access and permits: Free — public park

A small hilltop park with a viewpoint over the town and the mountains towards Oman. This is the Hatta location that works at sunset, when the dam has fallen into shadow: the sun drops behind the western ridges and the valley turns blue below.

- **November–February**: The sun drops behind the ridges ten to fifteen minutes before the official sunset; arrive an hour early.
- **May–September**: Dry air keeps the far ridges sharp even in summer, unlike the coast; the twenty minutes after sunset are the comfortable part.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Hatta a day trip from Dubai?

Yes: about ninety minutes each way from Downtown. Leave at half past six, shoot the dam from eight to ten, and you are back by early afternoon. For sunrise on the ridges and the dam in one session, stay a night at the Damani lodges or Hatta Dome Park.

### Can you film us from a drone over the dam?

Only with an approval that is not always granted: Hatta is part of Dubai and close to the Omani border. We apply when it is booked; if the answer is no, the dam wall and the ridge above it give the elevated view instead.

### Do we need to be able to kayak?

No. The water is flat and enclosed, the double kayaks are stable, and for the photograph you mostly sit still. Wear something that can get splashed, and leave phones in the dry bag.
