## In short

A desert photoshoot in Dubai starts from $290 for a 30-minute session on the dunes south of the city, timed to the low sun at either end of the day. You receive 20 edited photos in a private online gallery within 48–72 hours. The 4×4 transfer from your hotel is an optional $90 extra.

The desert is the one Dubai backdrop that is not a building, and it is planned by the sun rather than by opening hours. The red dunes at Lahbab are shot at sunrise, before the dune-bashing convoys cut tracks into them; Al Qudra’s paler sand and lakes suit families and anyone who would rather arrive by ordinary car. Golden hour lasts thirty to forty minutes this far south, so the session is timed to the minute — and from May to September it is sunrise only, finished by seven.

## How the shoot is planned

At Lahbab the 4×4 leaves the track and stops below a ridge that the night wind has wiped clean. The photographer walks up first on a single line of footprints, so the slope you will stand on stays smooth. The opening frames are wide: you as a small figure on the crest, sky behind, shadows running down the face of the dune. Then the camera comes closer for portraits with the sun to one side, and finally moves behind you for a backlit walk along the ridge in the last minutes of usable light. If you chose the paler Al Qudra option instead, the car parks on tarmac and the same sequence is shot on the low dunes by the lakes, with ghaf trees as a second backdrop.

## Timing

From November to February you can pick either end of the day. Sunrise at Lahbab comes around seven, the sand is cool underfoot and the tour convoys have not arrived; sunset gives a warmer sky but more tyre tracks to frame around. October, March and April still work morning and evening, though an afternoon start can be warm. From May to September only sunrise is booked, starting before half past five with the last frame by about seven, because the sand heats fast once the sun clears the horizon. At Al Qudra, weekday evenings are far quieter than weekends, when campers and barbecues fill the lakeside.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a desert photoshoot in Dubai cost?

The session starts from $290 and covers 30 minutes of shooting, the editing and 20 finished photos. The total mostly depends on how you reach the sand: driving yourself to Al Qudra adds nothing, while the 4×4 transfer to Lahbab with a driver is $90. If you fly home the next day, express delivery within 24 hours is another $60.

### What should I wear for a desert photoshoot in Dubai?

One saturated plain colour that separates you from the orange sand: cobalt, emerald, white and red all read well, while beige and khaki vanish into the dune. A light fabric that catches the breeze adds movement. Most people go barefoot for the frames, so shoes only matter for the walk up, and on a winter sunrise a warm layer in the car is welcome.

### Lahbab or Al Qudra — which desert should we choose?

Choose Lahbab for tall red dunes and a horizon with nothing on it; it needs a 4×4 and suits couples and solo portraits. Al Qudra is flatter and paler, with lakes and trees, and any car can get there, which makes it easier with small children or during pregnancy. Tell us which look you are after and we choose the exact spot around it.

### Can we have the photoshoot in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?

Only by joining one of the reserve’s licensed operators in their vehicles, with their tour fee paid separately, so the timing follows their departure. In return the sand has no tyre tracks and oryx or gazelle may appear in the background. Private 4×4s cannot enter, so if you want the session on your own schedule, Lahbab or Al Qudra is simpler.
