## In short

A desert photoshoot in Liwa starts from $290 for 30 minutes on the Empty Quarter dunes south of the villages, timed to sunrise or the last hour of sun. You receive 20 edited photos within 48–72 hours. Because Liwa is about three hours from Abu Dhabi, the session is planned around a night there.

Liwa is the edge of the Empty Quarter, and its dunes are on a different scale from anything near Dubai: ridges over a hundred metres high, smooth and untracked, rolling to the Saudi border. It is about three hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi, so a session here is built around a night in Liwa — sunset on arrival or sunrise before leaving. The sand is pale gold rather than red, the light is cleaner than on the coast, and in winter the mornings are cold enough for a jacket.

## How the shoot is planned

From Mezaira’a or Qasr Al Sarab, a 4×4 with a driver who knows this sand takes you into the ridges south of the villages. The car stops in a trough, and everyone climbs on a single line of footprints to a crest nobody has crossed since the last wind. The first frames are made from far away: the photographer stays on a neighbouring ridge, so you appear as a small figure on a sharp edge of peach-coloured sand. Then the distance closes for portraits, with low side light raking across the slope and the trough below falling into shadow. If the chosen ridges are near Moreeb Dune, the final frames use it in the background for scale.

## Timing

Sessions in Liwa run only from November to March; in the hot months the dune surface goes past 50 °C by mid-morning. In midwinter the sun comes up around seven, and the first minutes can be under ten degrees before the ridges catch the light one after another, east to west. Sunrise gives sand smoothed by the night wind and the clearest air; sunset suits arriving the same afternoon, when side light carves every crest. Around noon the desert flattens into a single colour, so the long drive belongs in the middle of the day. In December and January the festival at Moreeb brings crowds and closed roads to that dune, while the rest of the dune field stays empty.

## What is included

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a desert photoshoot in Liwa cost?

The shoot itself starts from $290 for 30 minutes and 20 edited photos — the same as on the dunes near Dubai. What adds to the trip is the night in Liwa, at a desert resort or a hotel in Mezaira’a, and the 4×4 with an experienced driver needed to reach the ridges; we confirm that arrangement and its cost when you book.

### Is Liwa worth the trip compared with the desert near Dubai?

If untouched sand is the point, yes. The dunes an hour from Dubai are lovely but crossed by tyre tracks from the daily safari drives; south of Liwa the ridges are far larger and usually clean. The trade-off is distance — four hours or more from Dubai — so it makes sense as part of a night away rather than a quick outing.

### Should we choose sunrise or sunset in Liwa?

One night gives you access to both, so the choice is about your plans. If you pick one, sunrise usually wins: the wind has erased the previous day’s footprints, the air is at its clearest and the sand is cool to sit on. Sunset is the easier slot when you drive in the same day and want the morning free for the road back.

### Can we do a flying dress photoshoot in Liwa?

Yes — the long, sharp crests here suit it, and red fabric on peach sand is one of the strongest frames in the country. Book the flying dress photoshoot rather than this one, so the dress and an assistant to throw the train come with the photographer. The same overnight planning applies, and calm winter mornings give the most control over the fabric.
