## Where a drone can actually fly

Flying a camera drone commercially in the UAE needs a licensed operator, registration with the General Civil Aviation Authority and, in Dubai, approval from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority for each flight. That paperwork is ours, but it decides where a session can happen. Downtown, the Palm and the areas around DXB and Al Maktoum airports are restricted or closed to drones; the desert, Hatta and stretches of coast away from the city are where aerial portraits are realistic. Approvals can also be suspended at short notice, so a flight is confirmed only once it is cleared.

From above, people become small, so the frames rely on shape and colour: a red dress on a dune ridge, two figures on an empty beach, a long shadow at sunset. Wear something that stands out from sand or water. Strong wind grounds the flight, and in summer a drone overheats sitting on hot ground at midday, so sessions run at sunrise or before sunset. One hour gives 25 edited aerial photographs, delivered within 48 to 72 hours.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where can a drone fly in the UAE, and who gets the permit?

We do, and you do not need to do anything. Every flight is by a licensed operator with a registered drone and approval from the aviation authority — the GCAA federally, and in Dubai the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. Most of Downtown, the Palm, the Marina and the areas around DXB and DWC are restricted, so aerial sessions are flown in the desert and on some stretches of coast outside the city. Personal flying is currently suspended in Dubai, which is why we never fly a client’s own drone.

### What if approval does not come through?

Approvals are per flight and can be refused or withdrawn at short notice. If that happens we move the date or switch the drone part to a ground photoshoot, and you choose which.
