# Dubai photoshoot

> Thirty minutes in Downtown, the Marina, Old Dubai or on the Jumeirah coast, started at the time the light there is low rather than the time that suits the diary.

## Which Dubai, and at what hour

Dubai is several backdrops, and half an hour covers one of them properly. Downtown gives you Burj Khalifa and the fountain promenade; Old Dubai gives you wind towers, the creek and abra boats; the Marina gives you water and lit towers after dark. Driving between them takes twenty to forty minutes — longer than the session itself — so pick one spot and let it fill the time: 20 edited photos from one place worked well look more varied than from three places glimpsed.

The hour matters more than the place. From May to September the only usable light is at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset; at noon the sun is overhead, eyes fall into shadow and the paving is hot enough to cut a session short. In winter, November to March, late afternoon is comfortable and the soft light lasts longer. Downtown fills from about 5 pm at weekends, while at 7 am the fountain promenade is almost empty.

Photographing strangers without consent is an offence in the UAE, so frames are composed to keep bystanders unrecognisable — one more reason quiet hours work better. The gallery arrives online within 48 to 72 hours.

## Frequently asked questions

### What time should we book?

Sunrise or the last hour before sunset, all year. From November to March midday is merely flat; from May to September it is over 40 °C and the coast is grey with haze. Sunrise also gets you the Marina promenade and the Burj Khalifa boulevard before the crowds — after 5 pm on a Saturday both are full.

### Can we shoot at the top of the Burj Khalifa or inside a mall?

Not as a professional session. Observation decks and malls set their own rules and generally do not allow professional equipment or organised shoots without their approval. We photograph the tower from the boulevard, Souk Al Bahar or the Dubai Opera side, which is where the whole of it fits in a frame anyway.
