## Pictures of you, not of your arm

Solo travellers come home with hundreds of photos of Dubai and almost none of themselves. Half an hour fixes that and doubles as a short walk with someone who knows the streets: we meet at a central point, usually Al Fahidi or the Dubai Marina walk, both a short ride from a metro station, and work on foot. If you feel awkward in front of a camera, the first few minutes are spent walking and talking; by then the lens has stopped being the focus.

Old Dubai suits the morning. The lanes of Al Fahidi are narrow, so light bounces off the sand-coloured walls and stays soft until about 10 am, and the abra across the creek to the Deira souks takes five minutes. The Marina works in the evening, once the towers light up. Shoulders and knees covered is the sensible standard for the heritage district and the souks, and it photographs better than beachwear against old walls anyway.
