## Why the early start pays

Sunrise in Dubai falls between about 5:30 and 7 am depending on the month, and the session starts 15 minutes before it, in the last blue light while the city lights are still on, and runs into the first sun. For the next hour places that are impossible later — the Dubai Fountain promenade, the front of the Museum of the Future, Kite Beach — are close to empty. That matters for clean frames, and because photographing identifiable strangers without consent is not allowed here.

In summer it is also the only safe slot: at 6 am the air may be in the low thirties, by 9 am it is near 40 °C and the light has gone flat. A camera brought out of an air-conditioned car fogs instantly in summer humidity, so it comes out ten minutes early, and so do sunglasses. In winter the desert gives the strongest colour, with the sun rising straight over the dunes; Downtown is best in the blue half hour, before direct sun reaches the street.
