## In short

A holiday photoshoot in Old Dubai costs from $180 for 30 minutes in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, starting at first light while the lanes are still empty. You receive 20 edited photos in a private online gallery within 48–72 hours, with posing guidance on the spot if you have never stood in front of a professional camera.

Old Dubai is the part of the city that does not look like the rest of it: coral-stone lanes, wind towers, wooden abras crossing the Creek for a coin. The Al Fahidi lanes are empty and softly lit from first light until about nine, then become a tour route; the souks across the water are the reverse. Thirty minutes in the lanes at first light gives a handful of frames planned in advance, before anyone else arrives. Shoulders and knees covered, and vendors are asked before they appear in a frame.

## How the shoot is planned

The session is a slow walk through the quarter, the way you would explore it on your own, with the photographer a few steps ahead. It opens in a narrow lane where you walk towards the camera and the light reflected off the walls does the flattering. Then come the details that say where you were: a hand on a carved wooden door, a wind tower rising above you, a shaded bench in a passage. Courtyards belong to cafés and galleries, so we ask before stepping into one. Towards the end the route bends to the Creek side of the quarter for a wider frame with the water and the moored boats, so your gallery closes with the view that places Al Fahidi on the map.

## Timing

Al Fahidi is a morning location, and the exact start depends on the month. From November to March the sun comes in low from the south-east, the lanes sit in open shade with bright walls above, and a 7:30 start is early enough. From May to September we meet at sunrise, around 5:30, because by 8:30 the shade has gone and the stone is warming fast. Either way, the tour groups arrive by about nine and the lanes turn into a route rather than a backdrop. Friday mornings are especially calm until midday prayers are over. October to April is the comfortable season; in summer the session is short by nature and finishes before the heat makes it unpleasant.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a holiday photoshoot in Old Dubai cost?

From $180 for 30 minutes and 20 edited photos, delivered within 48–72 hours. Walking the public lanes of Al Fahidi costs nothing, so there is no permit fee on top. Museums and galleries inside the quarter charge separately if you want to visit them afterwards. A vertical reel filmed between frames can be added for $120.

### Can we include the abra and the Deira souks in a morning session?

Not well. The souks are half-shut early in the morning and only come alive in the late afternoon, and the abra crossing looks best in the last hour before sunset, when the Deira bank catches the low sun. A morning booking stays in Al Fahidi. If the souks and the boat matter more to you than empty lanes, book an evening session instead.

### What colours photograph best against the Al Fahidi walls?

The walls are sand and coral, so anything close to beige disappears into them. Deep blue, white, emerald, rust or a soft pastel stands out without fighting the setting. Long sleeves or a light shirt over a dress, and a hem below the knee, keep you in line with the area’s modest dress. Flat shoes help on the uneven lanes.

### Can we go inside the heritage houses during the shoot?

The lanes are public, but the courtyards are private — cafés, galleries and museums each decide for themselves. We ask before using a doorway or a courtyard, and accept a no without fuss. Thirty minutes is best spent outside, where the light is; plan museum visits for after the session.
