Emirate of Ajman

Ajman is the smallest emirate and the quietest beach on the west coast, half an hour from Dubai, and the quiet is what you are booking.

The place

The Corniche is a long, public, west-facing beach with very little built on the sand side, and at seven in the morning it is a few joggers and the sea. That makes Ajman the practical choice for a family or maternity session on a beach without hotel loungers in every frame — and, for the many visitors who stay here on value, a session that starts at the hotel door. Sunset sessions face the sun over the water; the morning ones have the light behind you and the beach to yourselves.

Away from the beach the emirate has two different frames. The Al Zorah reserve to the north is a lagoon of mangroves with kayak routes and, in winter, flamingos. And Masfout, an Ajman enclave deep in the Hajar beside Hatta, gives mountains and dams to an emirate that otherwise has none. Ajman shares Dubai’s dress norms on the beach, but it is a more traditional town off it; the Ajman Museum and the old streets around it are visited covered.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Ajman, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. Ajman Corniche beach

Long, wide and gently shelving, with fine pale sand and few structures between the promenade and the water. A family can spread out here, and children can run without anyone else in the frame — the reason families book it over the hotel beaches of Dubai.

    Best time
Sunrise for an empty beach, sunset for colour
    Permits
    Free — public beach

    Light through the year

    • November–March

Sunsets are clear and the sun goes down into the sea; the promenade fills from five on weekends.

    • May–September

Morning only. The first hour has soft, even light and the beach is empty; by eight the haze has flattened the sea.

  2. Ajman Museum

An eighteenth-century fort with a wind tower, the ruler’s former residence, in the middle of the town. The sand-coloured walls take late light well and the square in front is rarely busy. Modest dress, and a short session — this is a heritage frame inside a family session, not a session of its own.

    Best time
    Late afternoon, outside
    Permits
Exterior: free. Interior: ticketed; ask before using a camera inside
  3. Al Zorah Nature Reserve

A protected lagoon of mangroves at the northern edge of Ajman, with flamingos in the cooler months. The water is calm in the morning, which is when the birds are feeding and the light is low across the channels. It is a soft, green location — the opposite of everything the beach and the skyline offer.

    Best time
    Early morning by kayak
    Permits
Kayak tours are paid separately; the reserve is protected

    Light through the year

    • November–March

Flamingo season, and the water is glassy until the sea breeze starts around ten.

    • May–September

Mosquitoes and humidity in the channels; the first forty minutes after sunrise only.

  4. Masfout

Ajman’s mountain enclave, ninety minutes inland and ten from Hatta: farms, dry stone, and a dam beneath brown ridges. It is usually combined with a Hatta session rather than booked from the coast on its own.

    Best time
Sunrise or the last hour of sun
    Permits
Free — open mountain land; respect private farms

Frequently asked questions about Ajman

Is Ajman’s beach good for a family photoshoot?

It is one of the best in the country for it: public, wide, shallow at the edge and quiet in the morning. Book sunrise in summer and the hour before sunset in winter, and bring a change of clothes for the children — they will be in the sea within ten minutes.

We are staying in Ajman — do you charge extra to come here?

No. Ajman is covered from Dubai at no travel charge, the Corniche and Al Zorah included. Masfout is a mountain trip and is priced with Hatta.

What is the nearest airport to Ajman?

Sharjah (SHJ), about twenty minutes away. Dubai International is forty minutes to an hour depending on traffic through Sharjah.
