The place

The city runs fifty kilometres along one road, Sheikh Zayed, and the places people want in a photograph sit at intervals along it: Old Dubai and the Creek at the north end, Downtown in the middle, Jumeirah, the Palm and the Marina further south, the desert inland behind all of them. Each has its own page on this site, because each has its own hour — Downtown’s skyline is a blue-hour subject, the Creek is a morning one, the Marina belongs to the last hour of sun. A session that tries to combine two of them is planned around the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, which at six in the evening can turn a twenty-minute transfer into fifty and take the sunset with it.

This page covers what sits between the districts: the Frame in Zabeel Park, Creek Harbour’s view back across Ras Al Khor to the Downtown skyline, Expo City out by Al Maktoum airport, and the two seasonal parks, Global Village and the Miracle Garden, which are only open in the cooler half of the year. Two rules apply everywhere. Photographing strangers without their consent is an offence in the UAE, so frames are built to keep identifiable bystanders out of them. And recreational drone flying in Dubai is suspended; aerial work is done by a licensed operator with approval for each site, and large parts of the city — around both airports, Downtown and the Palm — are not approved at all.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Dubai, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. Dubai Frame, Zabeel Park

A 150-metre picture frame in gold-patterned cladding, and the frame is the point: shot from the lawns at a low angle it holds the Downtown skyline inside it. The cladding is the difficulty. Under a high sun it reads as flat brass; it needs sun low enough to rake across the pattern, which is the last hour of the day. The Sky Deck’s glass floor is popular and narrow, and works for a phone photograph rather than a session.

    Best time
The hour before sunset, from the park lawns
    Permits
Park: small entry fee. Sky Deck: ticketed, no tripods, no photography in the history galleries. Commercial shoots need the operator’s approval

    Light through the year

    • November–March

Usable from about four; the gold warms properly in the last forty minutes. Weekend afternoons fill the park with families, so weekdays are easier to keep frames clean.

    • May–September

The lawns are open and shadeless. Thirty minutes before sunset is the whole session, and it is still above 38 °C.

  2. Dubai Creek Harbour promenade

The one place in the city where Burj Khalifa stands in a skyline rather than over you. The promenade looks south-west across the Ras Al Khor lagoon, so the sun goes down behind the towers: at sunset they become a silhouette, at blue hour they light up against a sky that still has colour in it. Quiet on weekday evenings, and twenty minutes from Downtown without crossing Sheikh Zayed Road.

    Best time
Sunset and the twenty minutes after
    Permits
Free — public promenade; a tripod or lighting rig may draw security’s attention

    Light through the year

    • December–February

The sun sets almost directly behind the Downtown towers — the cleanest silhouette of the year.

    • June–August

Humidity haze softens the skyline into a pastel outline; good for mood, poor for detail.

  3. Al Wasl Plaza, Expo City Dubai

The trellis dome from Expo 2020, 67 metres high, with projections on its inner surface after dark. It is forty minutes south of Downtown and almost empty on a weekday, which is the reason to come: wide, clean architecture with nobody in it. It sits beside Al Maktoum airport, so it is firmly a no-drone location.

    Best time
Blue hour, when the dome projections start
    Permits
Public areas: free. Pavilions and attractions: ticketed. Professional shoots are arranged with Expo City in advance
  4. Global Village

A seasonal fairground of country pavilions in replica architecture, and the most colourful place in the city after dark. It opens in the late afternoon, so the first hour is the only daylight there is; after that it is lit facades and crowds. By eight on a weekend the walkways are shoulder to shoulder, and keeping strangers out of a frame becomes most of the work.

    Best time
Opening time, 4 pm, on a weekday
    Permits
Ticketed entry; open roughly mid-October to early May, evenings only. Large rigs and commercial shoots need the organiser’s approval
  5. Dubai Miracle Garden

Flower arches, tunnels and full-size sculptures planted over steel frames. The planting is freshest early in the season and starts to scorch by April, so this is a winter location in practice. Mornings beat evenings: the flowers are open, the light comes low through the arches, and the coach groups arrive after ten.

    Best time
Opening time in the morning, November to February
    Permits
Ticketed; seasonal, roughly October to May. Professional photography is subject to the garden’s approval

Frequently asked questions about Dubai

Can we fit Downtown, the Marina and the desert into one session?

Not into one session, and not well into one day. The desert is a sunrise or sunset job an hour out of the city; Downtown and the Marina are thirty to forty minutes apart before traffic. The workable combination is two neighbouring districts — the Palm and the Marina, or Downtown and Old Dubai — with an extra hour, and the desert booked as its own morning.

Do we need a permit for a holiday photoshoot in Dubai?

For a private holiday session in public places — no, and we handle the ground rules. Venues are another matter: malls, hotels, the Burj Khalifa decks, Museum of the Future and Atlantis each set their own rules on professional cameras and tripods, and some charge for a shoot. We check the venue before the date, and any fee it charges is passed on at cost.

Can you fly a drone over our session?

In some places. Recreational flying is suspended in Dubai, so you cannot bring and fly your own; our operator is licensed and applies for each location. Downtown, the Palm and the areas around DXB and DWC are effectively closed to drones. The desert, and some stretches of coast, are where aerial work is realistic.

What should we wear for photographs in public?

Beachwear on the beach, anything reasonable elsewhere — Dubai is relaxed in its hotels, marinas and beach clubs. Heritage areas, mosques and Old Dubai expect shoulders and knees covered, and a session that moves from the beach to the souks needs a change of clothes in the bag.
