The dress is included, in several colours and sizes with long trains, and the effect is made by hand as much as by the wind: the fabric is thrown out of frame on a count and the shutter catches it at the top of the arc. Each throw takes a few seconds and a reset, which is why thirty minutes produces 20 edited photos rather than more — every frame is staged.

Wind decides the session. A light, steady breeze holds the fabric in the air; dead calm lets it fall, and strong gusts bring sand with them. Most flying dress shoots happen on the dunes at sunset or sunrise, with red, emerald or white against orange sand. In summer the Jebel Jais viewpoints in Ras Al Khaimah are the alternative, several degrees cooler than the coast, though about two hours’ drive from Dubai. The fitting takes ten minutes on site; wear nude underwear and bring flat shoes for climbing the dune.

The private gallery arrives within 48 to 72 hours.

Frequently asked questions: Flying dress photoshoot

What sizes and colours are there?

The dresses lace up at the back, so one dress fits a range of sizes — roughly XS to XL — and a maternity cut is available. Red, white and blush are the classics against orange sand; emerald and black also work. We send photographs of what is free on your date, and you choose before the shoot, not on the dune.

Who throws the train?

Our assistant, who comes with the photographer and spends the session just out of frame doing nothing else. A partner can try, but the timing of a throw against the wind is the whole trick, and it takes a few hundred practice runs.

What if there is no wind?

There nearly always is on a dune crest in the hour before sunset. On a dead-calm evening the assistant throws the train and the frame is made at the top of the arc — the photographs look the same.
