Sharjah has a public decency law that covers what you wear and how close you stand, and it is the first thing a session here is planned around.

The place

Sharjah is twenty minutes from Dubai’s Deira and noticeably more conservative. The emirate’s decency rules apply in public places to visitors as much as residents: shoulders and knees covered, nothing tight or transparent, no bare midriffs, and no public displays of affection. A couple’s session here is styled accordingly — longer dresses, linen, a hand held rather than a kiss — and the photographs are better for it more often than people expect. Beachwear belongs on hotel beaches, not on the Corniche.

What Sharjah offers in return is old fabric that Dubai has largely replaced: the restored coral-stone lanes of the Heart of Sharjah, the souks around them, and the lagoons of Al Majaz and Khalid with Al Noor Mosque on the water. Inland, forty minutes east, the Mleiha desert has red dunes, Fossil Rock and dark skies, and is one of the realistic places for aerial work. Many visitors fly in via Sharjah airport and stay in Dubai — the session can come to either side.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Sharjah, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. Heart of Sharjah

Restored houses of coral stone and gypsum, wind towers and narrow sikkas, with the light coming down into them in strips. It is a lived-in district with residents and shopkeepers, so frames are composed around doorways and walls rather than people. Dress for the decency code: this is where it is most visible.

    Best time
Early morning, before the shops open
    Permits
Free to walk; the museums inside charge entry. Commercial shoots need approval from the heritage authority

    Light through the year

    • November–March

The lanes run roughly east–west; low morning sun reaches the ground for an hour, then the strips narrow to nothing.

    • May–September

The shade in the lanes makes this one of the few places that works after eight in the morning, but only until about nine.

  2. Al Noor Mosque, Khalid Lagoon

An Ottoman-style mosque on the edge of the lagoon, and the frame is from the water’s edge opposite, with its reflection. The domes are lit at dusk; on a still evening the lagoon gives a near-perfect mirror. A mosque is a backdrop here, not a set: people stand beside it, not in front of the entrance.

    Best time
Blue hour, from across the lagoon
    Permits
Exterior: free, from the promenade. Interior: guided visits only, modest dress, no posing
  3. Al Majaz Waterfront

Lawns, palms and a long promenade on the lagoon, popular with families from late afternoon. The family-friendly crowd is a reason to keep the session calm and dressed; the reward is the skyline across the water turning gold, and a fountain show after dark.

    Best time
Sunset into the evening fountain show
    Permits
Free — public park and promenade
  4. Rain Room

An installation where rain falls everywhere except on you, lit by a single spotlight in a dark room. The slot is short, so the session is rehearsed outside — poses agreed, settings set — and the minutes inside are spent shooting. Dark clothing disappears; light fabric catches the beam.

    Best time
Any time — it is indoors; book the first slot
    Permits
Ticketed, short timed slots. Personal photography allowed; the venue sets rules for professional cameras
  5. Fossil Rock, Mleiha

A limestone outcrop full of marine fossils standing over red dunes, forty-five minutes inland from the city. It needs a 4×4 for the last stretch. This is Sharjah’s desert answer to Dubai’s — fewer camps, fewer quad tracks across the sand, and a ridge that gives height for a wide frame without a drone.

    Best time
Sunrise or the last hour of sun
    Permits
Access is managed by the Mleiha Archaeological Centre; aerial work only with a licensed operator and approval

    Light through the year

    • November–February

Sunrise lights the dunes from the east with the rock behind you; cold enough at dawn for a jacket.

Frequently asked questions about Sharjah

What can we wear for a couple’s session in Sharjah?

Shoulders and knees covered for both of you, nothing tight, sheer or cropped. Long dresses, maxi skirts, linen shirts and trousers all photograph well against the coral-stone walls. Swimwear is only for hotel beaches, and kissing or embracing in public is out — we pose accordingly.

We are staying in Dubai — is Sharjah worth the trip?

For the old town and the lagoons, yes, and it is closer than it looks: twenty to thirty minutes from Deira at the right hour. The wrong hour is the evening rush, when the Dubai–Sharjah roads are among the slowest in the country. Morning sessions go out against the traffic.

Can you shoot with a drone in Sharjah?

In the desert around Mleiha, with approval for the flight — yes. The city itself sits under the approach to Sharjah airport and is not a place we plan aerial work.
