Liwa is three hours from Abu Dhabi on the edge of the Empty Quarter, so the shoot is an overnight trip — and the dunes are untouched in a way that no desert near Dubai still is.

The place

The desert an hour from Dubai is beautiful and crossed with tyre tracks; every camp runs dune drives through it every afternoon. Liwa is a crescent of villages and date farms on the northern rim of the Rub’ al Khali, and south of it the dunes are some of the largest on earth — ridges of peach-coloured sand a hundred metres and more high, with clean crests and nobody on them. That is the photograph: a single figure, or a flying dress, on a knife-edge ridge with nothing behind but more sand.

The cost is distance. It is about three hours from Abu Dhabi and four or more from Dubai, and the light that matters is the first hour after sunrise and the last before sunset, so the session is built around a night in Liwa — at a desert resort such as Qasr Al Sarab, or a hotel in Mezaira’a. The dunes are reached by 4×4 with a driver who knows them; sand this soft and steep is not driven on a rental-car insurance policy. It is also the most realistic place in the country for aerial work: open desert, away from airports, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, where a licensed operator can apply to fly.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Liwa Oasis, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. Moreeb Dune

One of the tallest dunes in the world, often given as about 300 metres, with a steep face used for hill-climb races. The road ends at its foot. The face itself is scarred by vehicles, so the photographs are made on the untouched ridges around it, with Moreeb in the background as scale.

    Best time
    The hour after sunrise
    Permits
Free — open desert road; closed to the public during festival events

    Light through the year

    • December–February

Sunrise around 7 am; cold at the start, then the ridges light one after another from east to west.

    • October and April

Workable for the first hour only; the sand is too hot to sit on by nine.

  2. Qasr Al Sarab

A desert resort built like a fort in the middle of the dunes, forty-five minutes from the Liwa villages. For a couple it solves the logistics in one move: the room, the dinner and the sunrise are all in the same sand. Its terraces and towers make an evening frame; the dunes beyond the walls are the real location.

    Best time
The last hour of sun, from the dunes behind the resort
    Permits
A private resort: sessions on its grounds are for guests and need the hotel’s consent
  3. Empty Quarter ridges

The dune field south of the villages: long, sharp crests in ranks, with the troughs between them in deep shadow at low sun. This is where the flying dress and the drone earn their price — red fabric on peach sand, or a single figure walking a ridge seen from above. Footprints are permanent until the wind comes, so we walk in on one line and keep the rest of the ridge clean.

    Best time
Sunrise and the last hour of sun
    Permits
Open desert; 4×4 with an experienced driver required. Aerial work by a licensed operator with approval

    Light through the year

    • November–March

Side light at sunrise and sunset carves every ridge; the hour around noon flattens the whole desert into one colour.

  4. Mezaira’a date farms and fort

Liwa’s main village: palm groves pressed against the foot of the dunes, and a restored mud-brick fort. The contrast — green palms, a wall of orange sand above — is the frame you cannot get anywhere else. In July the Liwa Date Festival fills the village; the rest of the year it is quiet farmland.

    Best time
    Late afternoon
    Permits
Fort exterior free; farms are private — photographed from the road

Frequently asked questions about Liwa Oasis

Can we do Liwa as a day trip?

Technically, from Abu Dhabi: six hours of driving for one sunset. We do not recommend it. One night in Liwa gives both the sunset and the next sunrise, the two hours that matter, and the drive happens in the middle of the day when the light is no use anyway.

Is a drone allowed in the Empty Quarter?

It is the most realistic place in the UAE for it, but not automatic: tourists cannot register a drone in the UAE, and our licensed operator applies for approval for the flight. In open desert away from airports and borders, approval is usually workable. Book the desert drone shoot rather than adding a drone on the day.

What should we wear on the dunes?

Solid colours that stand out against peach sand — red, emerald, white, deep blue — and nothing you mind getting sand into. Shoes come off for the frames. In winter, bring a warm layer for dawn; it can be under ten degrees before the sun is up.

Where do we stay?

Qasr Al Sarab if the budget allows — it is in the dunes and the sunrise is a five-minute drive. Otherwise the hotels in Mezaira’a, about forty minutes from the ridges we use. Either way, book early for December and January.
