Photographer & videographer in Palm Jumeirah

The Palm’s shape only exists from above, and from the ground it is a series of private hotels — so a session here is built from the few public edges: The Pointe, the crescent boardwalk, West Beach and the water.

The place

Most of the Palm is resorts and private villas, and the resorts treat a professional photographer with a client as a commercial shoot: on hotel grounds, including Atlantis, that means the hotel’s permission, often a fee, and sometimes a flat no. If you are staying at one of them we ask the hotel in advance; if you are not, the session uses the public places, which are fewer than people expect but well placed. The Pointe at the tip of the crescent looks straight at Atlantis across the water and has the fountain in front of it; the boardwalk along the crescent looks back across the fronds to the Marina skyline; West Beach, on the trunk, faces the sunset with the same skyline across the bay.

The frame people mean when they say "Palm Jumeirah" — the trunk and fronds from above — is a drone or an observation-deck frame. The View at The Palm sees it from the 52nd floor, ticketed and not a place for a full session. A drone over the Palm is only possible through a licensed operator with an approved flight, which is not guaranteed and is confirmed before you pay, never promised. A yacht from Dubai Harbour is the reliable way to get Atlantis and the crescent from the water.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Palm Jumeirah, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. The Pointe

A waterfront promenade at the tip of the Palm, facing Atlantis across a lagoon. The hotel sits to the north-west, so at sunset it is side- and backlit and turns pink-orange; after dark the fountain runs in front of it. Proposals here are planned for the edge furthest from the restaurants, where the frame is Atlantis and water only.

    Best time
The hour before sunset into blue hour
    Permits
Free — public waterfront; the fountain shows run in the evening

    Light through the year

    • December–January

The sun sets in the south-west, well to the left of Atlantis, so the facade takes warm side light rather than going into silhouette.

    • May–July

Sunset moves round to the west-north-west, closer to the line of the hotel: more backlight and a rim of light on the arch, and the best frame is just after the sun has gone.

  2. Palm Jumeirah Boardwalk

Eleven kilometres of boardwalk along the crescent, with the fronds and the Marina skyline across the water. It is the place for walking frames and for runners’ quiet at 6 am; there is no shade at all, so it is unusable from mid-morning in summer.

    Best time
    Sunrise
    Permits
    Free — public boardwalk
  3. Palm West Beach

The west side of the trunk, facing the sun as it goes down over the bay, with Dubai Marina and Ain Dubai across the water. The public stretch works for couples and families; the beach clubs on either side play music and fill up from 5 pm, which decides where we stand.

    Best time
    The last hour before sunset
    Permits
Free on the public beach; beach clubs have their own rules

    Light through the year

    • November–February

The sun sets in the south-west, close to the line of the Marina towers across the bay: the skyline goes to silhouette and the sky behind it is at its warmest.

    • May–August

Sunset swings round to the north-west, away from the skyline and over the fronds, so the towers lose their backlight; the beach clubs are at their loudest.

  4. The View at The Palm

The 52nd-floor deck looking straight down the trunk to Atlantis — the shape of the Palm without a drone. Through glass and with other visitors, so it gives two or three frames rather than a session; worth adding if you want the map view in your gallery.

    Best time
Late afternoon, for the shadow on the fronds
    Permits
Ticketed; tripods and professional sessions need the operator’s approval
  5. Atlantis The Palm, from the water

The hotel’s arch is best photographed from offshore, where nothing stands between you and it. A charter from Dubai Harbour reaches it in minutes, and the boat can hold position while the light changes.

    Best time
Sunset, on a charter from Dubai Harbour
    Permits
Hotel grounds need Atlantis’s approval; from a boat, only the charter

Frequently asked questions about Palm Jumeirah

Can we have the session at Atlantis?

Only with the hotel’s approval, which we request in advance and which may carry a fee from the hotel. Without it, the best views of Atlantis are from The Pointe and from the water, neither of which needs anyone’s permission.

Can you get the drone shot of the whole Palm?

Sometimes, never by default. The Palm is controlled airspace; a flight needs a licensed operator and an approval for that place and time, and some requests are refused. We apply first and take payment for the drone only once it is approved. The View at The Palm and a yacht are the fallbacks.

We are staying in a villa on a frond. Can you shoot there?

Yes — a private villa or a hotel room you have booked is the easiest location on the Palm. Morning light on the east-facing fronds, evening on the west-facing ones; tell us the frond number and we will say which.
