Fujairah faces east onto the Gulf of Oman: the sun rises out of the sea and sets early behind the mountains, which is the reverse of everywhere else in the country.

The place

Everyone arriving from Dubai brings a sunset plan, and it does not work here. The east coast looks out over the Gulf of Oman, and the Hajar Mountains stand directly behind it, so the sun comes up over open water and disappears behind the ridges a good half hour before the official sunset. The session to book is the sunrise one: the beaches of Al Aqah and Dibba lit from the front, and the mountains behind them catching the first light.

The second difference is the water. The east coast is clearer and rockier than the Gulf side, with coral off Snoopy Island and dhows anchored off Dibba, and it is the part of the UAE where a beach session can look like somewhere else entirely. Inland, the old Fujairah Fort and the mud-and-stone Al Bidyah Mosque — the oldest in the country still in use — give the heritage frames. Most visitors fly into Dubai and drive about ninety minutes across the mountains; Fujairah’s own airport has few passenger flights.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Fujairah, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. Al Aqah beach and Snoopy Island

A rocky islet shaped, from the right angle, like a sleeping cartoon dog, a short swim off the beach. The sun rises behind it, so at dawn it is a silhouette in a gold sea with the mountains lit behind you. The beach is mostly fronted by resorts, and the session is easiest from the one you are staying at.

    Best time
    Sunrise
    Permits
Hotel beaches for guests; snorkelling trips to the island are paid separately

    Light through the year

    • November–March

The sun comes up to the right of the island; arrive twenty minutes before sunrise for the pre-dawn colour.

    • May–September

Sunrise around 5:30, and by 7:30 the light is hard. Humidity fogs the lens when it comes out of an air-conditioned room — take it out early.

  2. Al Bidyah Mosque

A small mosque of stone and mud brick with four low domes, believed to be the oldest in the UAE and still in daily use. The best frame is from the hillside behind it, where two old watchtowers look down over the domes to the sea. It is a place to be photographed beside, quietly, and covered; it is not a backdrop for anything playful.

    Best time
    Early morning, outside prayer times
    Permits
Free; a working mosque — modest dress, women cover their hair, no posing
  3. Fujairah Fort

A restored fort of stone and mud brick on a low rise among palm groves and the ruins of the old town, with the mountains beyond. On this coast the morning light is the front light: it hits the east-facing walls straight on, and by mid-afternoon the mountains have already thrown the site into shade.

    Best time
    The hour after sunrise
    Permits
    Exterior: free. Interior access varies
  4. Al Hayl Fort and wadi

A small fort and watchtower in a gravel wadi fifteen minutes into the Hajar from the city, with sheer brown rock on every side. This is the mountain frame on the Fujairah side: no road, no buildings, just stone, palms and a dry riverbed. Flash floods are rare but real after winter rain — we do not go in when it has been raining in the mountains.

    Best time
The first two hours after sunrise
    Permits
Free — open heritage site; a 4×4 is easier on the last stretch

    Light through the year

    • All year

The wadi walls block the low sun early and late; the light reaches the floor about an hour after sunrise and leaves by mid-afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about Fujairah

Can we get a sunset shoot in Fujairah?

A sunset sky, sometimes; a sun setting into the sea, never — the sea is to the east. The mountains cut the light early, so evening sessions start sooner than the clock suggests and finish in soft shade. For the photograph Fujairah is known for, book sunrise.

How far is Fujairah from Dubai?

About ninety minutes to Fujairah city, a little more to Al Aqah and Dibba. A sunrise session means leaving Dubai around four — which is why most clients who want one stay a night on the east coast.

Can we photograph at Al Bidyah Mosque?

Respectfully, yes: outside prayer times, covered, and without posing. Women cover their hair; shoulders and knees covered for everyone. The frames we make there are calm portraits beside the mosque and the view down from the watchtowers, not a couple’s session.
