The desert is the one landscape near Dubai where a drone has room: open sky, no towers, and sites far enough from the airports for flights to be approved. From the air the dunes show what cannot be seen from the ground — the ripple patterns, the curve of each ridge, a tiny figure or a 4×4 crossing it. Ninety minutes gives 20 edited aerial photographs and a 60-second aerial film from the same flights.

Timing decides it. Within an hour of sunrise or sunset the sun is low enough for every ripple to cast a shadow; at midday the dunes go flat and white from above. Protected areas, including the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and parts of Al Marmoom, have their own rules on flying, so the site is chosen together with the flight approval — often around Al Qudra or on private camp land. Fine sand is hard on motors, so take-offs are from a mat, and strong afternoon wind can push a flight to the next morning.

Photos arrive within 48 to 72 hours and the film in 2 to 3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions: Desert drone shoot

Why the desert, and who handles the drone permit?

Because it is where flying is realistic: well away from the airports and the city, the inland desert sits outside most of the restricted airspace that covers coastal Dubai. We obtain the flight approval from the aviation authority and fly our own registered drone with a licensed operator. Some protected areas, such as the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, are closed to drones and outside visitors, so we choose dunes where both are allowed.

Can we combine it with a ground photoshoot?

Yes — book it alongside the desert or flying-dress photoshoot and both work the same sunset, the photographer on the sand and the operator on the ridge behind.
