What does the shoot in Dubai Marina look like?

The route

We meet on JBR beach about an hour before sunset, when the sun is over the sea and the sand is still warm-toned. The first reel is built here: barefoot walking shots, turns into the light, close details of hands and fabric. Next is the bridge to Bluewaters, where the wheel gives a vertical frame a strong upright line; this is where transitions are filmed, covering the lens and revealing a new outfit. The last half hour is on Marina Walk towards the Cayan Tower end, away from the restaurant terraces, for slow pans of the lit towers in the water and a final reel that ends on the skyline. The shot list follows the audio you chose in advance.

The timing

The ninety minutes run from about an hour before sunset to about half an hour after it, so the footage moves from daylight to blue hour in the right order for the edit. November to March is the easy season: blue hour on the canal falls around 6–6:45 pm, before the promenade fills for dinner. In summer it slides to about 7:30 pm, the busiest stretch of the evening, so we frame tighter and expect the lens to fog for the first few minutes out of an air-conditioned lobby. Ain Dubai’s lights are checked on the day, since the wheel has had long closures.

What we do take care over is strangers: filming people without their consent is an offence in the UAE, so the videographer frames around passers-by, waits for gaps and keeps the busiest restaurant stretch out of the shots.

Where is the best spot in Dubai Marina for night Reels?

The canal itself at blue hour, on the stretch towards Cayan Tower, where the towers on the far bank are reflected in still water and the crowd is thinner. The bridge to Bluewaters works just before that, while there is still colour in the sky behind the wheel. After full dark the reflections stay, but the faces need more light.
